This is an assortment of links to help get you in a New Zealand mood and spark ideas. It is by no means complete or comprehensive. If there's a site that you think has some great information, please pass it along and I'll add it to the list.

Please note that while I have visited all of these sites I can't vouch for them. Please use all suitable care (anti-virus programs and the like) when downloading anything from the Web.

Fan-created Timelines

A Journey With Frodo - incredibly detailed and well-cited retrospective following Elijah Wood's involvement in the films; begins with the casting process and will continue through the 2004 Oscars (is a work-in-progress but contains an amazing amount of information, quotes and pictures)

LOTR Real Person Canon - interesting anecdotes, also has some pictures and quotes

There and Back Again - sets, locations, news and a timeline

A Writer's Timeline - again interesting anecdotes, pretty heavy on Orlando and Viggo


Fonts

dafont.com Runes, Elvish fonts - many could be the same as the those at Font River

Dan Smith's Fantasy Fonts for Windows - collection of fonts used in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings including Runic fonts and Tengwar; also has really good information about the alphabets and how to use them

General (a little bit of everything)

About the Songs and Poems in the Lord of the Rings - interesting essay on the many times characters sing in the books, sometimes with the writer's take on what the songs might have sounded like

Council of Elrond - highlights include a character database with screencaps, fonts, transcripts and a list of other resources

The Encyclopedia of Arda - another encyclopedic resource including a movie guide and maps and illustrations

The Green Books - articles about Tolkien themes, Q&As, triva; a nice mix of opinion, analysis, and info pulled directly from Tolkien or educated guesses based on what was written

The Grey Havens - articles, links, full text of songs; not updated in a while but everything still available

Henneth Annûn Research Library - pages for people, places and events including direct quotes from the books

A Hobbit's Tale - info on the actors, with some pictures, the characters, the score, galleries; just a lot of information

Lord of the Rings Costume - research into the costumes worn in the films, including fabrics and pictures of specific details

Lord of the Rings Fanatics Site - specifically good for the "guided" tour and artwork

Lord of the Rings Tolkien Wiki - another wiki of info

Parma Endorion: Essays on Middle Earth - a free e-book for download

Races of Middle-earth - history and details on every race Tolkien created, from The Valar to the Barrow Wights.

The Thain's Book - an encyclopedia of information about the people, places and creatures in the books; features a chronology including a day-by-day breakdown of the events during the War of the Ring

TheOneRing.net - a lot of information in the archives about filming, interviews with the actors, etc.

There and Back Again: A Geek's Adventures in Middle Earth - from Ain't it Cool News; this is the final report but the index to all eleven parts is at the bottom

Tolkien Gateway - wiki with a variety of info on the characters including different iterations from other productions and a good image library

Tolkien Meta FAQ - answers to questions you didn't know you had about the books and the world Tolkien created

Uruviel's Argonath - a variety of resources including sound files and pictures

Who is Tom Bombadil? - I think the title says it all *g*

Aumania Fantasy Art by J.R.R. Tolkien - a set of his sketches and drawings

Camarila's Lord of the Rings Artist Image Gallery - just as it says, a collection of images by Tolkien artists

David Wall Photography - if you're looking for a specific picture of New Zealand or Australia, it's very likely David Wall will have it

Film Locations Link 1; Film Locations Link 2 - Two links with various pictures from around New Zealand

The Lord of the Rings: A Visual Journey - a really great collection of stills and promotional images from the film

Middle-earth Tours - lots of images for the people, places, prequels and "specialties" like The Great East Road, and pages for Tolkien artists with samples of their work

New Zealand Pictures and Photos - gorgeous photographs of a gorgeous country with interesting info about the locations

Rolozo Tolkien - graphics of varying quality but a large variety to look at

Screencap Paradise - a nice collection of caps from all three films

Ted Nasmith Tolkien Illustrations - really nice artwork of many scenes throughout the books

TheOneRing.net Movie Locations Guide - pictures of areas of New Zealand either where filming took place or it was surmised were used for filming

Tolkien Galleries and Artwork - an assortment of artists, varying quality, but some very good

Tolkien Movies.com - still has a decent collection of images, including shots of sets


Language

Ardalambion - very detailed with links to online courses

The Elvish Linguistic Fellowship - journals, articles and links of information

Fellowship of the Word-smiths - a lot of information about all the languages in the films, including Dwarvish and Old English; includes linguistic surveys and analysis and an elvish dialog list

Tolkien's Languages: Sources of Information - primarily information about Quenya and Sindarin

Backpack New Zealand Maps - another alternative for maps of the country

Chetwood - color map of Middle-earth (b&w version below)

Filming location map - detailed map about where specific scenes were shot in New Zealand along with a legend showing, I believe, where all the artisans came from

Lonely Planet Map of New Zealand - has a few maps of specific cities and a gallery

The Lord of the Rings Maps - a variety of maps (not very large)

Map of Middle-earth - black and white map of Middle-earth (color version above)

Middle-earth - a kind of "google" map of Middle-earth with some of the major locations marked
